I’m a procrastinator.
There, I said it. Can you admit it, too?
There are plenty of us out there and important – like many things in life – to take the first step and admit you have a problem. Now that you’ve done that, it’s time to take the steps to fix it.
The problem with procrastination is, of course, that it has so many side effects. Not only will waiting until the last minute cause you unnecessary stress, but it could also cause lateness, lack of a good product (if we’re talking about a work deadline), stress for others, and so on.
If procrastination is in your nature, it’s going to be difficult to get rid of it altogether. However, there are strategies you can use to help ease the pain – and the symptoms – of procrastination.
1. Give yourself extra time.
It seems like a no-brainer, but this is an important one.
Whether it’s a work deadline or simply getting ready in the morning, give yourself extra time so don’t run late thanks to procrastination.
A good example would be that if I know it takes me two weeks to do a project, I’ll tell my client that it’s going to take two and a half weeks. That way, I’m not scrambling at the last second and delivering a product that isn’t up to my standards.
2. Use your lists.
I’ve talked a lot about list making in the past (mostly because I have a true love for them), but also because they work.
List making is great way to break up a larger project or to-do item into smaller pieces, which can be difficult for procrastinators. (Often knowing something big is looming creates more of a chance to keep putting it off.)
The bonus? Checking items off your to-do list will feel great!
3. Mix up the good and bad.
Another reason procrastination can occur is because you simply don’t have the energy or desire to do something. That’s ok…but it still needs to get done.
A strategy for this is to mix up the things you want to do with the things you have to do. For example, when it comes to something like cleaning, break up the tasks you like by going back and forth between the good and the bad for you.
4. Find the right circle(s).
Hanging out with other procrastinators will never help you get past your last minute habits.
Try to find – and be inspired – by those in your circle who are the types to get things done on time or even early. Get motivated by the fact that it’s possible!
