I Hate That I Haven’t Been Writing

So I’ve been writing for clients, but I’ve been neglecting my blogs over the past 4 – 6 months.

Full admission: I hate that I let that happen. It bothers me all day, every day. It’s exactly what I warn clients about, and now I’m the hypocrite.

Why I haven’t been writing

Now that we have that out of the way, let’s talk about why.

After spending much of my work day writing for clients, I haven’t felt altogether inspired to sit down and write on my own blogs. It’s an excuse, but that’s the truth of it.

So now, I plan to remedy it. Here’s how.

How to get over the blogging hurdle

Whether you’ve gone through something similar, or you simply are having a bit of writer’s block, here are a few helpful ways to get over the blogging hurdle.

Get inspired

Get inspired by looking up blog inspiration or blogpost starters. Here’s a great place to find some inspiration on Pinterest. Additionally, you can also read at your favorite blogs in order to gain some inspiration. (After all, the best writers are also the best readers!)

Plan ahead

In order to plan for the rainy day when you will (inevitably) have writer’s block or have difficulty writing (for, ahem, 6 months or so), it’s best to plan for the worst.

Here are a few tips for planning blogposts ahead of time:

  • Keep a running list of post ideas that you can go back to later. Often, it’s simply about having the beginnings of a direction that will do it!
  • When you’re in a writing mood (and have the time), write, write, and write some more. You don’t have to publish these posts; simply save them for later.
  • In a worst case scenario – and I wouldn’t recommend this for everyone – you can backdate a post if you get into a jam. For example, if you typically post on Wednesdays, but miss your day one week, it’s not the end of the world to backdate a post. (For full transparency, I will likely try to fill the past 6 months with some posts soon.)

Make the time

Carve out an hour or so and force yourself to write, even if you don’t know what to write about. This is a good exercise to break through writer’s block by sitting down, removing distractions, and just writing. Even if you don’t come up with anything at all, you’ll start creating a “writing time” happen. Better yet, maybe you’ll create something amazing!

No one said blogging would be easy. Hell, if it was, everyone would do it! So here’s to taking my own advice and getting back at it!
