Want to Be Happy? Stop Looking At Others and Starting Looking in the Mirror

It’s easy to expect a relationship – whether romantic or plutonic – to make you happy. Sure, a relationship can certainly add meaning and joy to your life, but you can’t rely on it to make you happy. Sadly, someone else can’t define your happiness.

Only you can do that.

You are the sole person responsible for defining and making yourself happy. No one can do it for you. They can add to it, sure, but they can’t be solely responsible.

Personally, I find that when I’m unhappy one of two things is to blame: 1) hormones (being a woman is tough, man!), and 2) I’m relying on others too much to make me happy. I’m looking out when I should be looking in.

Stop letting other people define you

The way of the world in 2016 is tough. Everyone has an opinion; everyone is judging…all the time.

Ignoring what other people think is, of course, easier said than done. I myself have a problem allowing other people to make me feel guilty when I shouldn’t.

But no matter what…never ever let someone else define who are you. Don’t let them decide what’s too skinny and what’s too fat. Don’t let them decide whether you’re good looking or not. Don’t let them decide whether you’re smart or not.

Guess who defines that? You and only you.

Quit chasing someone else’s idea of a perfect life

Another difficult thing in 2016. With social media ruling at least an hour of our days – every day – it’s easy to get sucked into how great everyone else’s lives look.

The reality? Everyone has shit going on. Everyone is a wreck sometimes. And even the people you’re wasting your time being envious of are staring right back…envious of your life.

It’s all about perspective.

Choose to live for today instead of looking to tomorrow

“I’ll be happy when…” is a phrase I’ve heard come out of way too many peoples’ mouths.

Ok…so what happens when “when” happens? For most of us, there’s a new goal and a new dream. So, really, we’re never, ever happy.

Break the cycle now. Today. Right this instant. Because if tomorrow comes and you didn’t get to do all the things you could have – and should have – “today,” I guarantee you’ll regret it. Don’t have regrets.
